Interested in a Freestyle Clinic?
Colleen Beres is planning to bring Karen Robinson in next April but needs to know if there is enough interest. She would have to book her soon for the April availability.

What to Expect From a Freestyle Clinic:
Karen Robinson's freestyle clinics are designed to put as many tools into your hands as possible, so that you can design and ride your own freestyle. Some riders decide to have her finish the project for them, in which case the fee of the clinic is partially reimbursed through a 10% discount off the price of the full freestyle package (my rates can be found at: www.applausedressage.com). She tailors each session according to the skill level and goals of the horse and rider pair, but here is a rough idea of what you would achieve with her in a clinic.
1. The lecture (optional) – this three hour session will take you through the entire design process, step by step. She shows videos of freestyles from FEI and lower levels, to give you an opportunity to see what she is talking about. She also covers the ‘do and don’t’ aspects of riding freestyles and how to understand judges’ scores.
2. Day one mounted – by the end of the first day of the clinic, you will have ridden to a variety of types of music that would potentially work for your freestyle. You will probably have been quite excited by at least one of the music ideas, and may want to use that music in your freestyle. She provides recording information on request so that you can go and find the music. She also records your horse’s tempos at each gait, and you can take that information to use in assessing other music that might be suitable for a freestyle.
3. Day two mounted – by the end of the second day of the clinic, you will have at least a rough outline of choreography for a freestyle at your level. If things go smoothly and quickly, you may even have a complete pattern. If you are not yet ready to ride a freestyle, or you aren’t sure what your horse’s level will be when the time comes to do a freestyle, then the option is to spend at least part of the second day riding to music, with a smaller amount of time dedicated to teaching you how to choreograph according to your horse’s strengths and weaknesses.
4. Day three mounted (optional) – we can achieve music selection and choreography in two rides; a third day is only recommended for FEI, particularly Grand Prix, level) – if the clinic is three days long, by the end of the third day the choreography will be complete, she will have timed it to ensure that it fits within the time limit for competition, and you may have ridden segments of the choreography to the music you chose the first day.
Karen keeps all her notes from clinics, so even if a year passes she can email you anything you want to know from the clinic in regards to your horse’s tempos and music selection. She doesn't generally write down the choreography unless you have decided to have her complete the freestyle for you, so if you are finishing the freestyle yourself it is a good idea to have a video of the clinic, or someone to take notes of the work you do on the pattern.
Many riders find watching video of their rides quite useful, particularly when it comes to the music selection. You may think you chose your favourite trot song from the first day, but when you watch the video, you might decide another one of the songs visually enhances your horse’s rhythm and expression better. It’s a chance to see for yourself what Karen is seeing, and what your judge and audience will see in competition.
There needs to be a minimum of 8 riders to make this work (to a maximum of 10 riders). There would be 2 - 45 minute mounted sessions. One Saturday & one Sunday. The cost for the mounted sessions is $210/rider (for both sessions).
Usually there is a 3 hour classroom type seminar Friday evening before. The cost for the seminar is $475. Depending on how many people attend this part will depend on the cost per person. If 8 people came the cost would be $60/person.
The cost of Karen's travel is over and above the clinic costs. Again, please contact Colleen for more information or to register at Tel: (306) 728-5674 or email: firstname.lastname@example.org
